Union Territories of India

India has eight union territories.

Each state and union territory in India has its history, culture, and language. In terms of size, geography, and economy, India’s Union Territories are distinct from its states. People who live in these locations have their traditions and customs.

Union Territories of India

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, National Capital Territory of Delhi, Puducherry, Ladakh, and Jammu & Kashmir are India’s eight union territories.

They do not have their government and are administered by the federal government, unlike the states of India, which have their state governments (union government). Delhi, Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), and J&K are the only three union territories in India that have their legislatures.

Each union territory has its capital, which serves as the administrative centre.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

After independence, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands became India’s first union territory. At the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, these islands are located to the southeast of the India Peninsula mainland. Andaman and Nicobar are one of the best places to visit for a relaxing vacation, with crystal blue water, stunning beaches, and a touch of history thrown in for good measure. The Andaman Islands have something to offer every tourist, from the pristine, unspoiled beaches of Neil and Havelock Islands to the bustling town of Port Blair.

Chandigarh

Chandigarh, a union territory that serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, is a nuanced and ideal representation of the term “city.” Chandigarh, like Delhi, has the distinction of being both a city and a union territory at the same time. Although it is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, it is directly ruled by the federal government. The state of Punjab borders it on the north, south, and west, while the state of Haryana borders it on the east.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu

According to laws issued by the Indian government, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have merged to become a single union territory (effective January 26, 2020). The capital of this new union territory will be Daman. Dadra is in Gujarat, but Nagar Haveli is sandwiched between the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. It is an ideal indulgence into the wild side for a tourist, with the hills of the Western Ghats and surrounding lush foliage, and its Portuguese background makes it famous among history aficionados as well.

On May 30, 1987, the Union Territory of Daman and Diu was founded. On August 11, 1961, Dadra and Nagar Haveli united with the Republic of India as a Union Territory.

Jammu & Kashmir

On August 5, 2019, the government abolished Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, divided the state into two union territories, and announced that Jammu & Kashmir would become one of India’s new Union Territories with its legislature, similar to how Puducherry and Delhi are run. It will be a self-administered administration with a legislative government in the case of the J&K Union Territory.

Ladakh

Ladakh is a land unlike any other, with a variety of things to see and do, as well as spectacular scenery, amazing people, and culture. On October 31, 2019, Ladakh was officially bifurcated, following a long-standing desire to make it a union territory. Ladakh is a Union Territory with no legislature. Leh and Kargil are the two districts that make up this region.

Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep, which means “hundred thousand islands,” is home to some of India’s most stunning and unusual islands and beaches. Lakshadweep, India’s smallest union territory, was once a part of Madras (now Chennai) before being separated and given the status of Union Territory. It was known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi islands until November 1, 1973, when the name Lakshadweep was officially adopted. It is the smallest of India’s union territories in terms of area, and it is located southwest of the Indian peninsula mainland in the Laccadive Sea.

National Capital Territory of Delhi

Delhi, also known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is a city and a union territory in India that includes New Delhi, the country’s capital. Delhi, like the other Indian states, has its legislature, high court, and council of ministers. From historical buildings to congested shopping malls, and Mughal gardens to the Delhi University campus, the capital city has many faces, making it “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”

Puducherry or Pondicherry

In 1962, the erstwhile French colonies of Mahe, Pondicherry, Karaikal, and Yanam merged to form Pondicherry. These colonies are now Pondicherry’s districts. Tamil Nadu borders the districts of Karaikal and Puducherry, whereas Kerala and Andhra Pradesh border the districts of Mahe and Yanam, respectively. Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry and known simply as Pondy, is one of India’s seven Union Territories. It is known as the “French Riviera of the East” and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive and enthralling destinations to visit in South India.

Pondicherry is a small town buried away on India’s southeast coast, and it is a place that offers travelers purity and tranquillity in the true meaning of the terms. It is located in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The Indian аrliаment has the power to reshape the country’s political landscape.
