According to news reports and videos posted on social media, a sizable waterspout was spotted off the coast of Florida on Tuesday morning, leaving onlookers in awe of the natural phenomenon.
In a video posted by weather.com, a beachgoer who witnessed the breath-taking scene near the city of Destin was heard saying, “Look at that dude, that’s a big ‘un.”
The National Weather Service in Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama, reported in a tweet that storms in the region were causing a sizable waterspout off the coast and advised boaters to exercise caution. According to the tweet, the storm appeared to be moving parallel to the coast of Miramar Beach.
Around 6 a.m. central time, in another video posted by the Weather Service, a driver is seen recording the scene as a car travels along a Florida highway.
The National Weather Service described the waterspout as “a rather impressive one” while outlining its formation in a series of tweets.
According to the National Weather Service, they can be classified as either fair weather waterspouts or tornadic waterspouts and behave similarly to tornadoes over water.
According to the Weather Service, fair weather ones are typically the less dangerous of the two and can be frequent over South Florida’s coast from late spring to early fall.
