Blowing Rock is a town in the North Carolina counties of Watauga and Caldwell. Blowing Rock is part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area in Caldwell County, and the Boone Micropolitan Statistical Area in Watauga County.
It takes its name from The Blowing Rock, a formation with panoramic views of peaks, forests, and the Johns River Gorge.
Blowing Rock gets its name from an unusual rock formation that rises over 1,500 feet (460 metres) above the Johns River gorge. Because of the shape and size of the rock, wind currents from the gorge frequently blow vertically, causing light objects to float upwards into the sky.
The famous outcropping provides spectacular scenic vistas of North Carolina mountains such as Mount Mitchell, Grandfather, Hawksbill, and Table Rock. It’s arguably the best selfie location in Western North Carolina.
Blowing Rock Township is located in Watauga County and is considered to be one of the best places to live in North Carolina. Blowing Rock Township provides residents with a suburban rural mix feel, and the majority of residents own their homes. There are numerous restaurants and parks in Blowing Rock Township.
Visitors can drive nearly to the peak’s summit, taking in long-range views along the way. Exploration of unique mountain habitats is possible thanks to a network of five trails. The trails range in difficulty from moderate to strenuous. The park is about 45 minutes from Blowing Rock in West Jefferson.
The entire trail is about a half mile long. The self-guided trail takes about 15 to 25 minutes to walk. The grounds are 70% accessible to people with disabilities.
